This was taken for Project Lead The Way Principles of Engineering at Maine East High School. The rules were modeled after the national bridge building contests. The entire project was really entertaining because of so much carnage during testing. Props to Mr. Schultz (our teacher) for getting in on the action and buiding his own bridge. Enjoy! Below are the exact specifications based of the project: Equipment: -20 Balsa Wood Stringer -Wax Paper -Tacky Glue -Straight Pins -Ruler -Razor Knife -Cardboard or corkboard work surface Constraints: 1. The bridge must employ a truss design. 2. Models will be constructed using only the provided materials. 3. Dipping, soaking, or painting to add strength is prohibited. 4. The bridge must span a 250mm gap. 5. The maximum height of the bridge is 100mm. 6. It must be possible to slide a roadway plank along the deck with enough clearance to pass a 20mm tall toy car. The plank will be 2mm thick and 50mm wide. 7. No part of the bridge shall be more than 10mm below the top surface of the roadway deck 8. A load plate 50mm x 50mm will be used to load the structure at the mid span. The roadway deck should be strengthened or reinforced at the load point. 9. There must be an opening in the top of the structure through which the load plate can pass to bear on the roadway deck. A 10mm hole through the roadway will be provided for a load piston to enter.
