Wooden Toys - How to Clean and Care For Them

Wooden toys are durable and when properly cared for can last through generations. These simple steps will help you keep your child's wooden toys clean, antiseptic and in good condition. We propose that you clean all of your child's wooden items commonly and thoroughly to help prevent the spread of germs. Because our wooden toys are made of natural materials, it is important to understand the difference in the middle of unfinished and closed wooden items. Some of our wooden toys are unfinished. These toys have not been dyed or painted in any way; rather they have been left in their natural state. Our closed wooden items are treated with non-toxic dyes and natural paint finishes.

Daily Cleaning - Both closed and unfinished toys can be wiped clean with a dry cloth for daily maintenance and cleaning. Unfinished toys can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, or parasite to take off dirt, or dust and then wiped dry.

Wooden Toy

Finished toys can be gently cleaned with a natural, unabrasisve soap and exiguous water. Once cleaned, the moisture should be wiped away with a dry cloth and the items should be allowed to dry thoroughly before use. A rinse of water and vinegar can be used in closed items to take off crayon marks and oil based discoloration. Regardless of whether finish, soaking in water is never recommended as this can cause swelling.

Deep Cleaning- if your wooden items requires deep cleaning a bleach and water solution can be used. The ratio is as follows: 1 part household bleach to 10 parts water. Dampen a cloth in the solution and wipe the toy clean. Rinse speedily with plain water and dry with a cloth and allow the toy to air dry thoroughly before use.

Caring for Wooden Toys

o Avoid leaving your wooden playthings face for extended periods of time. Sun damage can fade wooden playthings over time and water damage can cause your wood toys to swell and age prematurely.

o Sand down any rough areas with fine sandpaper if the item should come to be splintered, or scratched.

o Do not expose your wooden items to immoderate moisture unless intended as a teether.

o When it's time to clean your wooden toys, try to wipe with a dry cloth first. If a moist cloth is required to take off dirt, dampen the cloth only slightly to clean. Wipe away moisture and allow to air dry.

o Keep in mind that water is the enemy - never soak a wooden plaything as it will Ant. Eject the water.

o Never clean wooden toys with furniture polish. Furniture polish contains toxic materials that can be harmful if ingested by your child.

o Never use harsh household cleaners on wooden items as the chemicals can be absorbed by the toy.
Involve your child in the caring of their wooden play items and they will stay in playing condition for years to come.

Fighting Spinning Top - Japanese Kenkagoma Koma

Fighting Spinning Top - Japanese Kenkagoma Koma Video Clips. Duration : 1.88 Mins.

When I showed this video to my Japanese father-in-law (mid 70s) his face lit up as he began telling me how as a boy he and his friends would stage exciting fighting top competitions on the street in front of their home (rural farming community without much car traffic). Fighting tops are a special variety of spinning top (tops in general are called koma) made of solid metal or wood with a steel ring around the outer edge. The tops are "thrown" after a long string is wound around the body; and some skill is necessary to give a top a proper spin and to cause it to land within range of an opponent's top. Once engaged, a pair of fighting tops will crash and bang into one another until a victor is declared when either one top stops moving or has been pushed outside the designated game area. This video was filmed outside an old fashioned candy store near my home in Shizuoka Japan. A tip from grandpa Suzuki: My wife's father points out that a kenkagoma's steel ring may sometimes come loose from the wooden body. He notes that when he was a boy and this happened he and his friends would place the top in water for a short while in order to cause the wooden body to swell and thus reseat the ring. directorzone.cyberlink.com
